Matt King’s Balloon Room Room
Saturday 20 June 2009  1pm to 6pm
part of DIG IN’s CultureWorks
at The BIG on Bloor Festival
Balloons are a ubiquitous festival image. The iconic image of the balloon creates instant recognition that one is part of a celebration. Artist Matt King has conceived The Balloon Room Room,  a participatory art piece for annhomanART , a feature of DIG IN's CultureWorks at The BIG Festival.

In the last few years, recent OCAD-grad King has toured the world as part of the Toronto indie band dd/mm/yyyy. Often playing as part of a festival lineup, King is rarely able to resist setting up his own tongue-in-cheek booth "selling" dollar store items. Art as commerce as a kick at commerce, and our need for it. His sensibility is a perfect fit for this event.

The Balloon Room Room will feature a suspended lightweight mannequin of a child clutching a bouquet of 100 helium balloons.  During the festival, King will inflate balloons marked $1, selling them to festival-goers as he and they participate in the revitalization / gentrification / commercialization (take your pick) of the neighbourhood.
